What pests are common in Scarborough

  • Cockroaches are a common worry in apartment buildings. Shared laundry rooms, garbage rooms and kitchens give them places to hide and travel.
  • Bed bugs move between suites through gaps around pipes and outlets.
  • Mice are a risk for homes with older sheds, garages and basements.
  • Ants and wasps show up in warmer months around decks and yards.

Our two main services here are cockroach control and bed bug treatment.

Homes in Scarborough and the pests they tend to see

Scarborough has many housing types.

  • Apartment buildings and towers, including mid-century slabs along busy roads like Eglinton, Kennedy and Sheppard: cockroaches and bed bugs.
  • Townhouse complexes: shared walls mean a problem next door can become your problem.
  • Bungalows and detached homes, including those near the Bluffs: mice in crawl spaces and garages.

Homes near ravines, such as the Highland Creek and Rouge areas, often have more wildlife close by. Sealing gaps and storing garbage well helps keep mice out. Our rodent control page explains what we look for.

Renting in Scarborough: landlord and tenant rules

Scarborough is part of Toronto, so Toronto’s rules apply. Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act says the landlord must keep your unit in a good state of repair.

The City’s Property Standards Bylaw says properties must be kept free of rodents and insects. For larger apartment buildings, RentSafeTO also asks owners to check shared areas at least once every 30 days, act within 72 hours of a pest report, and use a professional pest control company.

If you have a problem:

  1. Tell your landlord or property manager in writing.
  2. Add photos and dates.
  3. If it is not fixed in a timely way, contact 311.

What to do before treatment

A few steps make treatment easier in a Scarborough apartment or townhouse.

  • Wipe down kitchen counters and store food in sealed containers. Cockroaches need very little to live on.
  • Keep laundry rooms and shared garbage areas as clean as you can, and report problems with them to your property manager.
  • Fix leaky taps and pipes. Cockroaches and many other pests need water.
  • Clear clutter from floors and under sinks so the technician can see and reach the areas that matter.
  • Keep sheds and garages tidy, with stored items off the floor, to give mice fewer hiding spots.

Whatever you do, avoid moving belongings between rooms or to a neighbour. That can move the pests with them.

Common questions

Is Scarborough covered by Toronto's rental pest rules?

Yes. Scarborough is part of the City of Toronto, so the Property Standards Bylaw, RentSafeTO for apartment buildings and 311 all apply here in the same way they do downtown.

Do you serve Agincourt and Malvern?

Yes. We serve Scarborough, including Agincourt and Malvern. Add your neighbourhood to the quote form and we will confirm details with your quote.

Do you treat townhouses?

Yes. Townhouses share walls, so a pest in one home can move to the next. We ask about neighbours during the inspection step and plan treatment with that in mind.
