Pest control in Guelph

Guelph pest control for homes, student rentals and businesses, with a free quote sent in under 30 minutes.

Guelph is a university city with two rivers and many older houses. That mix means shared student homes, tight turnover dates and pests that move between rooms and units.

Student rentals near the University of Guelph

Many students rent shared houses or apartments for a single school year. Move-in and move-out days bring furniture and luggage in and out of the same rooms. Bed bugs, mice and cockroaches can travel the same way.

Common trouble spots in a shared house:

  • Kitchens with crumbs, open food and full garbage
  • Second-hand sofas, mattresses and bed frames
  • Gaps around pipes in basements and laundry areas
  • Boxes stored on the floor for months

If you live in a shared rental, tell the landlord about a problem early and in writing. Do not wait for the lease to end. See our pages on bed bugs and bed bug treatment.

Our process: inspect, identify, treat, follow up. Quote details reach you in under 30 minutes.

What Guelph’s Property Standards By-law says

Guelph’s Property Standards By-law (2000)-16454 has a short pest section. It says every building and accessory building must be kept free of rodents, vermin and insects, and every yard free of rodents and vermin. It also says every opening that might let them in, including an openable window, must be screened or sealed.

Guelph does not run a rental licensing program. The City says shared rental housing does not need a licence. The City looked at licensing in 2014 and decided against it. Rentals are covered by by-laws such as property standards and by fire and building codes. So the pest rule above is a main tool when a rental has a problem.

Bed bugs in a Guelph rental: who does what

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health says landlords are responsible for keeping rental units pest-free. Tenants should tell the landlord right away, keep written records and take photos. If the landlord does not act, the health unit points tenants to the City, the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit or the Landlord and Tenant Board.

The same page advises against doing your own pesticide treatment. Ask your landlord to arrange a licensed professional, or request a quote yourself.

Termites in Guelph: a City matter

The City of Guelph runs its own termite program, with designated termite management areas. The Property Standards By-law even leaves termites out of its pest section, since a separate City program covers them. Termites are not a service we list on this site. If you see mud tubes or damaged wood, start with the City of Guelph termite page.

What pests are common in Guelph

Mice near the rivers. The Speed River and Eramosa River corridors give mice cover and food. As nights cool in the fall, they test garages and basements. See rodent control.

Cockroaches in older apartments. Shared walls and kitchens near downtown help roaches move between units. Cockroach control is most effective when the whole building takes part.

Wasps. Eaves, sheds and porch roofs on older houses, including those in neighbourhoods such as St. George’s and Old University, are good nest sites. Ask for wasp nest removal rather than knocking one down.

Ants. Spring brings trails to kitchens and bathrooms in newer homes as well as old ones.

Moving in or out of a Guelph rental

A few checks at the start of a lease save trouble later:

  • Look at mattress seams, bed frames and sofa joints for dark spots or live bugs
  • Check under sinks and behind the fridge for droppings or roaches
  • Take dated photos and send them to the landlord
  • Do not bring in curb-side furniture

When you move out, wash and dry fabrics on high heat before packing them. Clean kitchens well, because leftover food keeps pests around for the next tenants.

Businesses in Guelph

Restaurants, shops and offices downtown need a steady plan, not one-off fixes. See commercial pest control.
