Pest control for retail stores

Stock rooms and loading areas attract pests. Keep your shop and your stock protected.

Customers rarely see a pest in a shop floor display, but a single sighting can cost trust. Most retail pest problems start in the places shoppers never see: stock rooms, receiving areas, break rooms and waste areas. We work with independent shops, grocers, shopping centre tenants and property teams across Ontario. Request a quote and we send details in under 30 minutes.

Who this is for

This page is for owners and managers of clothing and gift shops, hardware and home stores, convenience stores, grocers, bakeries and shopping centre tenants. Your pests differ depending on what you sell, but the entry points are very much alike.

Food retail versus general merchandise

A grocer or convenience store has food to protect, so rodents, cockroaches, ants and pests in dry goods all matter. A clothing or home store has less to feed on, but cardboard, packaging, break-room crumbs and warm, quiet back rooms still attract mice, roaches and ants. We start by asking what you sell and how it is stored.

Pests that matter in Ontario shops

Mice and rats

Rodents slip in under doors and around pipes, then nest behind shelving and in stock. Gnawed packaging, droppings and greasy marks along walls are the signs. See our rodent control service and the guides to mice and rats.

Cockroaches

They arrive in cartons and move into warm areas near the break room, washrooms and drains. Read about cockroach control and the cockroach guide.

Ants

Ants follow food and moisture indoors, and spring and summer are when they show up most. Our ant control page explains the options, and the ant guide helps you identify them.

Stored-product pests

Pests in flour, pet food, seed, spices and other dry goods can turn up in packaging on the shelf. Older stock at the back of a shelf is the first place to look.

How receiving and stock rooms become entry points

Every delivery is a chance for something to come in. Boxes sit on pallets, doors stay open during unloading, and cardboard piles up. Check incoming cartons for droppings, damage and live insects before they go into stock. Keep stock off the floor and away from walls so you can see and clean behind it. Keep garbage and cardboard away from the doors.

How our process fits a shop

We use the four steps from our integrated pest management guide.

  1. Inspect. We check the stock room, receiving area, break room, washrooms and the outside of the building.
  2. Identify. We confirm the pest and find what is feeding or sheltering it.
  3. Treat. We choose methods that suit a space with customers and stock. Anything near food is targeted and follows the label.
  4. Follow up. We come back to check results and treat remaining activity.

We will talk through scheduling around your trading hours when we book the visit. Customer-facing areas get as little attention as the problem allows.

What your team can do between visits

  • Keep stock off the floor and rotate older stock forward.
  • Break down cardboard and take it out regularly.
  • Clean the break room daily and keep food in sealed containers.
  • Seal gaps under doors and around pipes.
  • Have staff tell a named lead about any sighting, with the place and time.

Common questions

What pests are most common in retail stores?

Mice, cockroaches, ants and pests in stored food or packaging are the usual ones. Stock rooms and receiving docks are the main entry points, because boxes arrive from many places and doors open often.

Do grocery stores need different pest control than other shops?

Yes. Food retail adds sealed and open food to protect, so pests in packaged goods become a bigger concern. General merchandise shops still get mice, cockroaches and ants, but there is usually less to feed them. We tailor the plan to what you sell.

Can pest control be done without customers noticing?

We plan visits to be low-profile, and we focus on stock rooms, docks and back-of-house areas. We will talk through timing around your trading hours when we book. Tell us in the quote request what customers can see.

How do pests get into a shop?

Common routes are gaps under doors, around pipes and at loading docks, plus deliveries that carry insects or droppings. Cardboard, clutter and waste left outside add to the problem.

How fast will I get a quote for my store?
