Pest control in Niagara Falls: how we work

Few Ontario cities see as many visitors as Niagara Falls. Guests arrive from all over the world, and their suitcases can carry pests along with them. Homes here have their own issues, from old basements to garages near the river and parks.

We keep our process simple:

  1. Inspect. We look at where the signs are and how pests are getting in.
  2. Identify. Each pest behaves differently, so we confirm what you have first.
  3. Treat. We use a plan matched to the pest and the building.
  4. Follow up. We check that the treatment worked and tell you what to watch for.

What pests are common in Niagara Falls

Bed bugs. They travel in luggage, bags and used furniture. Places with guests coming and going all year, such as hotels, motels and short stays, give them many chances to move. Read about bed bug treatment if you suspect them.

Cockroaches. Kitchens, dish areas and storerooms in busy restaurants offer warmth, water and food. Cockroaches also move through shared walls in multi-unit buildings. See our cockroach control service.

Mice and rats. Garbage areas behind restaurants and cracks in older foundations draw rodents, especially as nights cool. Learn more about rodent control.

Wasps. Patios, garbage bins and sweet drinks bring wasps close to people in late summer.

Homes in Niagara Falls and what each tends to see

  • Older houses in areas such as Drummondville. Settled foundations and basements give mice and ants easy ways in. The City’s Official Plan names Drummondville as an area for more housing, so apartments are growing here too.
  • Homes near the tourist districts. Busy streets and many food businesses mean more garbage and more rodents nearby.
  • Villages such as Chippawa. Older buildings and green space nearby can bring mice and ants.
  • Apartments and basement suites. Shared walls and pipes let cockroaches and bed bugs spread between units.

Renting in Niagara Falls: who is responsible for pests

The City of Niagara Falls says the landlord must take steps to control rodents, vermin and insects. The tenant must keep the unit reasonably clean so it does not attract pests. The City’s Property Standards By-law 2015-101 also covers window screens and other openings that could let pests in.

If you rent, tell your landlord about the problem in writing and keep a copy. If the landlord does not fix it, the City says to contact Municipal By-law Enforcement. Tenants can also apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board.

Hotels, restaurants and attractions

Clifton Hill and the nearby tourist district are packed with restaurants, hotels and attractions. Lundy’s Lane has its own mix of shops, motels and eateries. Each business has its own needs, but the pests are often the same: bed bugs in rooms, cockroaches in kitchens, mice in storage and flying insects at entrances.

We work with owners and managers on a plan with inspections and follow-up. See our page on commercial pest control.

Pests through the Niagara Falls year

  • October to March: Mice and rats look for warmth. Seal gaps before the cold sets in.
  • April to June: Ants come out as the ground warms.
  • July to September: Wasps are most active around eaves, bins and patios.

Bed bugs and cockroaches live indoors, so they can show up in any month.

Why hotels and restaurants see bed bugs and cockroaches

These two pests thrive on people and food. Bed bugs hide near sleeping areas, such as mattress seams and headboards, and feed on people at night. Because guests change often, one unnoticed bed bug can end up in the next traveller’s bag.

Cockroaches look for warm, damp places with crumbs. A leaking drain, a gap behind a fryer or a cardboard box left on the floor can be enough. They often spread through pipes and wall gaps, so the neighbour of an affected unit needs a check too.

Staff training helps. Housekeeping can spot bed bug stains and shed skins. Kitchen staff can flag droppings or live roaches early. Our guide on signs of bed bugs shows what to look for.

Where to report rodents

Niagara Falls lists a few places to call. For rodents inside your home, contact Niagara Region Public Health. For a property in disrepair or with garbage attracting rats, report it to City By-law Enforcement. For help on your own property, a licensed pest control company can confirm the pest and plan treatment.

Do not use traps or poison in places where children or pets can reach them. For rodents in walls, ask for professional help.
