Renting in Ajax: what the by-law says

Ajax’s Property Standards By-law 46-2017 has a section called Pest Prevention. It says three things:

1. Buildings and their outside parts must be kept free of pest infestation such as rodents, vermin, birds, termites and insects at all times.
2. The inside of dwellings, and the common areas of buildings with several units, must be kept free of those pests.
3. Damage to a building caused by rodents, vermin, birds, termites or insects must be repaired.

The third rule matters. Chewed wiring, gnawed insulation and holes made by pests are repair items, not just something to put up with. If you rent, tell your landlord in writing, describe what you saw and when, and keep a copy.

Do foggers work on bed bugs?

If you find droppings, wear gloves and a mask, dampen them first and do not sweep them dry. Seal food in hard containers and keep the gaps around pipes closed. When signs keep returning, the entry points need to be found.
