The City of Cambridge says it inspects buildings and properties when there is a complaint about the inside or outside, to check that owners meet its Property Standards By-law. The By-Law Enforcement Office is at 519-621-0740 ext. 7907. The City is also reviewing its Property Standards and Lot Maintenance by-laws, so check its website for the current rules.

For bed bugs, Region of Waterloo Public Health says only professionals should apply pesticides. Its tenant guide says the landlord must keep the unit fit to live in, and that a landlord needs to give 24 hours’ written notice before an inspection. Tell your landlord in writing and keep a copy.

Usually, yes. The Region says pesticides for bed bugs should be applied by professionals, since a poor job can let the bugs spread or return. Do not spray store-bought products around the home. Wash bedding on a hot cycle and wait for the treatment plan.
